Student Wellbeing

Student Welfare and Pastoral Care at our summer camp

At Exsportise Summer Schools, the welfare of our students is always our number one priority. We offer one of the most generous staff-to-student ratios available and take the safeguarding of our students extremely seriously.

Our goal is to ensure the safety, happiness and well-being of all of our students through an exceptional learning experience, and with this in mind, we provide:

  • Very high supervision levels with an overall on-site staff-to-student ratio of one staff member to four students

  • A designated House Parent for each house, with staff bedrooms spread around the boarding houses for help and support

  • Most staff are residential and live on-site 24 hours a day

  • Experienced and professional staff dedicated to student welfare and enjoyment

  • On-site medical officers, multiple first aiders, medical treatment facilities and hospitals nearby

  • Police checks and Child Protection training for all of our staff

  • Closed campuses – students are not allowed to leave the site unaccompanied at any time

  • A fully-accompanied travel and transfer service from and to all major London airports and the Eurostar at London St Pancras.

For further information, please see our Exsportise Safeguarding Policy and the Exsportise Duty of Care here.

Behaviour Management at Camp

We want every student to have a memorable experience at Exsportise, learning and growing alongside friends from around the world. Our trained welfare team knows that new environments can feel challenging at first, so we take time to understand and support every child. By modelling respect and building strong working relationships, we create a positive community where every child feels safe, respected, understood, and has the confidence to thrive. To make the experience safe and enjoyable, everyone at our camps is expected to follow the Camp Code of Conduct (Camp Rules) outlined in our Parent Guide.

We will always quickly intervene in behavioural incidents in a supportive manner that aligns with our Team Orange values and promotes learning. Our support can involve offering gentle reminders, encouraging students to reflect on their actions, or developing formal action plans to help them improve. However, serious breaches of the Code of Conduct or persistent poor behaviour may lead to removal from camp.

Support for Homesickness

Participating in a summer school is an exciting experience for any student. While most students adjust quickly to camp life, others may feel anxious about their new surroundings and being away from home. As most students settle into camp and engage in various activities, their anxiety or homesickness is short-lived, and they quickly make new friends from around the world and settle into life at Exsportise. However, for some students, the process of adjusting can take more time.

We work closely with parents to address any concerns and ensure each child's best experience. Our attentive staff are trained to spot any emotional changes in students’ behaviour that might raise concern. They will do everything possible to support and comfort students, helping them make the most of their time at Exsportise. From our experience, excessive contact with home during the initial days often worsens homesickness; therefore, we encourage parents to help their children become more independent by limiting contact.

Injury, Illness and Medication

We are proud to be recognised by the British Council as an industry leader for "5-star" medical care, by going above and beyond for our students' safety.

Each of our camps features a dedicated Medical Bay staffed by two on-site Medical Officers and numerous senior pastoral staff qualified in First Aid and trained to administer medication. This guarantees that if a student needs their daily medication or suffers an injury or health issue, there are always staff available to assist them promptly in a professional manner. To ensure the highest level of care for our students, parents must complete our Medical and Consent forms prior to camp.

For further information on Medication, Insurance and Medical Conditions, please visit our page on Medical Care at Camp.

Diet, Nutrition and Hydration

Meals at camp are nutritionally balanced and designed for young athletes and active young people. There are a variety of meal options to choose from, including a vegetarian option. We monitor each student to ensure they are eating and drinking enough during mealtimes. Water is always available during sports sessions, and our coaches ensure players regularly rehydrate. We also talk to the students about the importance of nutrition and hydration in workshops and throughout their time at camp.

We can cater for most dietary requirements when notified in advance. For more information, please visit our Food on Camp page.
